Our Story
The Venison Barn was founded in 2020, right in the midst of Lockdown, when Morag and her eldest son Russell decided to take a bold step and introduce something new to their farm. Russell had witnessed deer farming in action whilst working in New Zealand and liked the idea of working with these majestic animals. With years of experience in beef, sheep, and dairy farming—and backgrounds in very different fields (Morag in Accountancy and Russell with a Master's in Mechanical Engineering)—they combined their skills and set out to start their very own deer farm. The first batch of hinds arrived in Autumn 2020 and they were off and running (literally!).
In 2024, Russell moved to New Zealand with his partner Beth, and today, Morag runs the business on her own but with help from all the family. From managing orders to accounts and everything in between, she keeps the farm running smoothly every day.
Morag’s second son, Rob, brings his farming and fencing expertise to the operation, taking care of the hands-on work while teaching his young son Murray the ropes, and Rob's partner Heather utilises her Marketing degree to manage the social media side of the business. Mandi, Morag’s daughter, is also an invaluable member of the team, giving up her spare time to lend a hand wherever needed. Her experience in animal health comes in handy too.
At The Venison Barn, we’re proud to offer high-quality, locally sourced venison products, including steaks, sausages, mince, burgers, meatballs, and more. Behind each product is a hardworking family, a commitment to quality, and a deep respect for the land and the animals we care for.
Thank you for supporting our journey. We’re excited to share it with you.
